Parking Ticket Appeal FormMinimize
How to Appeal Your Parking Ticket Minimize

Parking tickets are not criminal offenses. They are a civil penalty which both the registered owner and operator of the vehicle are responsible for. Once the ticket is issued, it is up to the registered owner to respond to the ticket.

Every citizen has the right to appeal their ticket and have their case reviewed by the Sergeant. The Sergeant will verify the facts of each appeal and come to a quick, fair and impartial decision.

Parking tickets must be paid within 7 days.  After 7 days, the amount of the original ticket doubles, before a Court Summons is issued.

How to Appeal a Parking Ticket
  • You may file your appeal by email, or in person at the Police Department. The Police Station is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and appeal forms are readily available at the Station.

  • Appeal must be done within the first 24 hours of receiving the ticket. Tickets cannot be appealed if the ticket was issued more than twenty-four (24) hours prior to the date and time on the ticket. Failure to file within 24 hours results in the forfeiture of the appeal right/process and the registered owner is required to pay the assessed fine.

  • The Sergeant on duty reviews all appeals. Command Staff, Patrol/Reserve Officers, Dispatchers and Administrative/Support Staff do not handle appeals.

  • During the appeal process the 7 day clock to pay the ticket is suspended if an appeal form is submitted.

  • Appeal forms will be automatically denied if the form is deemed by the Sergeant not to be filled out completely with the proper information as per the instructions found on the form.  (see list below of other reasons for a denial

  • When you submit your appeal, the Sergeant will review it within seven (7) days. You keep your ticket, and you will receive a response by mail/email. If you have not received a response regarding your appeal within 10 days, please contact our office.  If the appeal is granted, you may keep the ticket and letter for reference.   If the appeal is denied, you must submit your payment within seven (7) days along with the appeal form or ticket. You have seven (7) days to pay the original fine. If you pass the seven-day limit, you must then pay the additional penalty found on the ticket.

  • Once a decision has been by the Sergeant, the appeal form cannot be submitted for appeal a second time.  The Sergeant's decision is final.
Common reasons which DO NOT support dismissing a citation are:
  • I was only a few minutes late.
  • I did not know I could not park there.
  • I think the amount is too high
  • I cannot afford to pay the fine.
  • I have never had a ticket before.
  • I will never do it again.
  • I have spent a lot of money in your stores.
  • I have a parking permit (not valid at Short Sands)
  • I’m a resident.
  • Most cities don’t use meters on the week-ends and holidays.
