Our new School Resource Officers first day back to school. Officer Shaun Darrow will reside at the York High School, while Officer David McKinnon will call York Middle School home.
The School Resource Officers (SROs) represent the York Police Department’s commitment to community policing through an innovative partnership with the York School District. The York Police Department currently has a full-time police officer assigned to the York High School and another officer assigned to grades K-8. Both are sworn police officers who, report to the Detective Sergeant.
The SROs are present at the schools to maintain the safety of the students and faculty and to provide a safe and positive learning environment. The strong partnership between law enforcement officers, teachers, administrative staff, students, and their families is essential to creating safe schools.
A School Resource Officer is not just an officer at school they wear many different hats. Officers Darrow and McKinnon are there to listen to the students, whether they are having a good or bad day. The SRO office gives the students a safe place to open up and speak freely, no matter what the topic - no topic is off the table.
It has been said, "it takes a village" to raise a child, and our School Resource Officers and the entire York Police Department are part of that village.
